Recognizing nits: how do you do it?

You don’t have to be a “helicopter parent” to keep a close eye on your son or daughter. When your child comes home from a tiring day of school or an even more tiring camp, you not only check the condition of his clothes (which ones need stain remover and which ones can go in the wash?), but also the amount of bumps and bruises. Does the apple of your eye itch quite often (literally)? Then it’s not a bad idea to also subject his scalp to a careful inspection, because maybe lice and nits have taken up residence there. For those who have no idea how to recognize the latter, this article is compulsory reading!

What is a nit?

If your child has lice, lice eggs or nits are guaranteed to be involved. A female louse can lay up to eight nits a day for ten days, and she often does so behind the ears and on the neck, where it is nice and warm and moist. A nit is smaller than a millimeter, and white or yellow in color.

Combing hair and recognizing nits

Lice are easy to treat, but you must first be sure your child has them. Therefore, get out the lice comb, and comb the hair carefully. If you find white or yellow dots (nits) or black bugs (lice) between the teeth of the comb, then it’s time to get to work with lice shampoo or lotion.

Tip: you can find lice shampoo and lotion by Elimax simply at your pharmacist.

Dead nits or flakes?

Dead nits are translucent rather than white or yellow, and therefore look like flakes. Sometimes they are difficult to distinguish from those that are still alive. Their location on the hair arrow may be an indication. If they are farther away from the scalp, then it has been a while since they were laid – after all, the hair has grown – and they may no longer be alive. Still, you can’t always rely on that. Behind the ear, for example, is a popular spot, and there the nits are not against the scalp but rather in the middle of a strand of hair. Whether you are dealing with dandruff or nits, you can tell immediately. Flakes come off immediately, while nits (even when dead) stick firmly to the hair.
