Allow your hair some freedom of movement

Our hair is naturally planted in a certain way in our scalp. If you force them in a different direction, for example, by tying a too tight ponytail, your scalp may start to itch over time. So try to tie up your hair a bit looser and regularly give yourself a head massage to stimulate the blood circulation.

Itchy scalp: lice alert?

Although head lice are not a skin disease, they do cause annoying itching. Lice are parasites: to feed, they suck blood from the scalp. To do this, they make small wounds. It is these wounds that can itch. Lice are especially common in children, but adults are not immune to them. To detect lice, you have to pull a fine-toothed lice comb through your locks and especially check behind the ears and in the neck because those are the places where lice lay their eggs. Did the inspection reveal lice and/or nits? With Elimax® shampoo or lotion you tackle those annoying critters in the most efficient and safe way.

Even if the lice are dead, the itch may persist for a while. To alleviate this, you can wash the hair with Elimax® After-Treatment Shampoo for a while after the lice treatment.

When dandruff throws a spanner in the works

Furthermore, an itchy scalp can be caused by dandruff – identifiable by the white flakes that end up on your neck and shoulders after scratching. These flakes are dead skin cells. An anti-dandruff shampoo combats the buildup of dead skin cells, reducing the itch – and you can wear dark T-shirts or sweaters with confidence again.

Shampoo with detergents? Not a good idea!

That wonderfully smelling shampoo that you are so fond of? It might be less innocent than you think. Many shampoos contain detergents that clean your skin so well that its natural barrier gets damaged. Such aggressive products can cause your scalp to dry out very quickly and start to itch. A sulfate-free shampoo can be the solution in that case.

Finally: other possible causes?

If the above does not help to explain why your scalp is itching, there are still a number of possible causes that you can consider, such as

  • Scalp fungus
  • Psoriasis
  • Seborrheic eczema (a variant of dandruff)

A visit to the dermatologist is advisable for these conditions.
